Likewise, the server went down while I was following a subject, I nearly panicked since I was not finished. This forum is the most addicting one on the web. I guess because the format is really easy to read and follow as well as great subject matter. Good to see it back up and running.

So I guess the real question is: If you have a fast connection and slow response, which view are you using, the Active Topics view like this:

Or the regular view like this:

I have fast response with the Active Topics View and Slow with the regular view. I like the regular view but don't like the delay...

I open regular view, and open each new discussion in a new tab. Then read and close tabs as I go; the first one you opened will be done loading, no matter how slow your connection, and by the time you move on to the rest everything's ready to do.

So, yeah, get ye to Firefox, and learn the joys of tabbed browsing. None of this 'back button' nonsense.

This is not a complaint but ...

this site is probably the that I slowest one I visit. It doesn't matter where I am, DSL, dial-up or whatever, in comparison it does run slower. I am not complaining it is just an observation. I have heard about the new server, CPU speeds, connections speeds etc, but still is much slower than other sites even when I surf from the same computer using the same connection in the same session or in other words, with level playing field.

I usually just clean my desk while I am surfing the OLF.

For the life of me I can't figure out why this is. It isn't like I don't hear ya when people tell me that, but honestly, except for the main page load time (which I can't really do anything about) I have very good response.

Why some people get it fast and others get it slow is a mystery. I really think it has to be something about the Internet and the path you travel to get to our server (at least that is my present working theory). That would also explain why some sites are really fast and the OLF is slow.

If I could fix it I would.... for sure.

I know you would Brock - you guys are great.

Pings and Traceroutes show your site response to be a little under normal (95ms vs typical 45-70ms for ping and 15s for a tracerout vs 7-10 typical) but that doesn't explain the normal view. The site overall is fast, it's just the normal forum view that's slow to load. It seems that it's a matter of the server parsing all the thread titles into a display format. When the page is loading you can see the bottom activity info going crazy. It's the server plowing through the database to provide the appropriate display.

Hey Brock,

I got a 1500k ADSL connection and I to have slow refresh rates at the OLF. Sometimes it can be up to 30 seconds to reload the main discussion page after viewing a topic.

But given my location, I think you may be onto something with your "path you travel" theory. Anyhow, what I get from the OLF is generally well worth the wait.

Even if I was still stuck with dial-up, I would be grateful for access to this site. It was not that long ago folks when having an interest in this facet of woodworking was to sentence ones self to solitary confinement, especially here in Australia.

Cheers

Kim
